Vitamin D:
Contributes to normal absorption/utilisation of calcium and phosphorus
Contributes to normal blood calcium levels
The main sources of Vitamin D for us are from exposure to the sun and certain food / vitamin D supplements. In July 2016, the UK Government's Nutrition Committee recommended that supplementation via the latter is essential during the winter months (when there is limited UVB light from the sun), for people who cover up when they go outdoors or for anyone who does not spend sufficient time outdoors.
